Description
European Sallet with armours mark. The bevour and neck guard are a modern replacement for display only. (Curtis 2500 years European Helmets page 111, A similar Sallet was in Sotheby’s catalogue 30 June 2004 pages 60, 61 with a different medial ridge with no makers mark. Don’t know what the hammer fall price was.) None of the above helmets show makers marks.
XRF testing on this piece revealed a softer metal was forged into this one piece helmet to take the blow of the armourers stamp. More tests are being conducted at the moment. A near carbon copy of this helmet is in the armoury museum in Paris, same rolled edge, same all over. Research I’m doing points to this helmet being a genuine 15th century manufacture. I’m still researching the armours mark.
